FORTY-FOUR

When Robbie Decker left the Wolf Haven Wildcats locker room Lily was already waiting for him next to his powder blue Mustang. He swept in and kissed her, adrenaline from the game still coursing through his veins. They had won easily. The Lagrange Bulldogs hadn’t beaten the Wildcats in their last fourteen meetings, but this year had been a particularly bad rout, with the final score standing at 48-3.

“Come on, let’s get up to the kegger,” Robbie said, unlocking the passenger side door for her. “I’m pumped and ready to party.”

“Robbie, you know I can’t.” Lily gave him an apologetic look. “My parents don’t think it would be a good idea for me to go to a party in the woods, and they told me to come straight home after the game.”

“That’s ridiculous. The kegger’s a wildcat tradition. Everyone knows about it.”

“I’m sure they do. But we aren’t from Wolf Haven. I didn’t grow up here. All my parents see is a bunch of kids boozing it up in the woods and having sex.” Lily climbed into the car and looked up at Robbie. “Maybe they’ll let me go next year.”

“We’re seniors. There won’t be a next year. We’ll have graduated.”

“I might not be able to go to the kegger, but we can still have some fun before you drive me home. My parents won’t know when the game ended, so that gives us at least fifteen minutes.”

Robbie rounded the car and hopped in the driver’s side. He pushed the key into the ignition and started the engine, his foot pressing down on the accelerator so that the throaty 2.8-liter V6 roared. “I’m not sure how much fun we can have in fifteen minutes.”

“I’d better show you then.” Lily reached over and ran a hand up Robbie’s leg to the inside of his thigh.

“Oh.” Robbie grinned. “You think we should be doing that right here in the parking lot?”

“Heavens. Get your mind out of the gutter. I didn’t mean that. I meant this.” Lily leaned toward him. She put a hand on Robbie's shoulder and kissed him, her lips lingering on his. “See, isn’t that fun?”

“I’ve done worse things.” Robbie pulled her close and kissed her again, his hand roaming up her back and reaching her neck. His other hand rested on her knee.

Fifteen minutes was not long enough.

He drove her home, wishing he could turn the car around and take her up to Sullivan’s pond instead. They could be alone there, and it would be much more fun than the stupid kegger. But he knew she would never agree to it. He pulled into her driveway instead. For his chivalry he received another quick kiss, more of a peck this time lest her father was peering out the window, and then she was gone. He watched her race up the front path and into the house, then reversed out of the driveway and drove out of town toward the party, which would by now, he was sure, be in full swing.
